ALTERNATOR

Avoid switching off the engine by using the master switch (if fitted). It *should* work, but sometimes it might result in the alternator producing a voltage spike which might destroy the diode pack in the alternator regulator. Apart from that, the alternator is a non-service item that keeps working until the lights start dimming and the ignition light glows. Alternators should not be closely wrapped in heat shielding because their designs incorporate fan venting. All vents should be free to circulate air, however close the alternator is to the exhaust headers.

Alternator belts

Alternator belts on the k-series can fail dramatically, given external influence. If debris causes the belt to throw, it can get wrapped around the crank front pulley and shreds will be drawn under the timing belt cover. This can lead to valve/piston contact and an expensive engine rebuild, so in the event of any belt failure do the following:
