From SimonLambert? at Caterham Cars on 24th December 2002:

This notice affects customers who have taken delivery of a new car or kit since April 2002. Everyone will be contacted by letter, but with the Christmas post delaying their arrival, we recognise that this forum may help spread the information more quickly.

It has been brought to our attention that there may be a safety issue caused by the failure of an 'R' clip used to secure the clevis pin which connects the brake pedal to the brake master cylinder.

Earlier this year, we had reason to quarantine a batch of these clips as they failed whilst being fitted, due to a problem with the heat treatment process undertaken by the manufacturer of the clip.

At the time, we changed our process to replace the 'R' clip with a split cotter pin on all future builds, but it may be possible that a small number of faulty 'R' clips are still fitted to some cars in the field.

If you have a post April '02 car, we would strongly recommend that you check your car and if an 'R' clip is fitted, replace it with a split pin. To check, remove the pedal box cover by undoing the eight securing screws, which will give easy access to the top of the pedals. You will see that a clevis pin connects the top of the pedal to the master cylinder rod. This pin should have a split cotter pin through one end to secure it.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or the technical department on 01322 625800.
